Specificity and Complexity of Rock Drilling Operations

Offshore drilling in rocky soils represents a technically complex process requiring accurate calculations, equipment and experience. First of all, this is due to the features of soil. Tightly bound crystals of granite, quartz, diabase, etc., form the basis of the rocks. Having such structures, rocks sustain pressure exceeding 110 MPa and are very hard to machine.

Drilling in rocky soils is only possible when using special equipment. We perform offshore drilling using the Wirth drilling rig that allows us to carry out construction works in water areas with difficult geological conditions where hydraulic structures driving is impossible.

Our equipment

The works of such difficulty are performed with state-of-the-art Wirth PBA- 818 drilling rigs. These hydraulic rotary drilling rigs use the principle of air-lift.

The machinery creates a well with a diameter of 1–2.5 meters; the drill depth is up to 50 m. The bore rotation is 120 rpm, which provides for the face passage speed of 0.4 m/hour. The maximum possible well axis slope is 18 degrees.
